Angioplasty

angio

Definition: An angioplasty is to repair the blood flow through arteries that have affected by coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease results in narrowed or blocks arteries in the heart caused by plaque. When a angioplasty is preformed, a tiny tube is pushed through the arteries and the plaque is pushed up against the walls of the arteries. This widens the arteries and increase blood flow.

Example: Angioplasty is a surgical procedure performed by a skilled cardiologist with a catheter often inserted through the patient’s groin or arm in order to open a blocked artery. A balloon at the end of the catheter is inflated once it reaches the artery and a stent may be permanently be placed within the artery to keep it open.
