Definition: Aortic insufficiency occurs when there is a defect with the aortic valve in the heart. This causes blood that has already passed through the heart to leak back from the aortic artery to the heart. Limited amount of aortic insufficiency can be harmless, however, if this becomes a larger problem it can require surgery.
