Definition: Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscles. When a person has cardiomyopathy the heart is affected in several different ways. The heart becomes dilated which causes poor pumping power and enlargement. It also becomes more restrictive which impaired ability of the heart to fill with blood. Cardiomyopathy also results in hypertrophic, or thickened, heart.
