Definition: Any surgery that involves repairs to the heart or heart valves in order to correct problems with the heart.
Example: The most common type of heart surgery is Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. Physicians also utilize heart surgery to implant medical devices to help control the heartbeat and blood flow, repair or replace damaged heart valves, repair damaged or abnormal structures within the heart, or even replace the entire heart with a healthy heart from a donor. Traditional heart surgery often included opening the chest wall by cutting through the breastbone and exposing the heart and connecting to a heart-lung bypass machine. Newer methods such as off-pump and minimally invasive heart surgeries may help to speed up recovery times and reduce risks. Consult with your physician on what type of heart surgery is best for you and treating your condition.
