I have been testing my Coumadin levels at the lab for 4 years now and I am sick of it! A nurse friend recently told me about being able to test my INR at home with a meter. That sounds much better to me! I read that Medicare covers home testing but I only have Blue Cross of Arizona insurance as I am not 65 years old yet. Do you know if this is covered in Arizona and does ACS service the Phoenix area?

Medicare does not view home INR testing as Durable Medical Equipment like they do for diabetes testing supplies. This means they will not pay for the cost of the meter outright. The good news is that they pay for the weekly home INR testing service!

This all inclusive service includes a required face-to-face training, a brand new CoaguChek XS meter loan, test strips for weekly testing, and lancets. Medicare requires that the results are reported to Advanced Cardio Services which are then transmitted to the prescribing physician or clinic for interpretation. This is required in order to bill Medicare and prove that patients are successfully testing with their INR meter and that the physician or clinic gets the test results. So we bill Medicare for the service and supply you with everything you need in order to successfully obtain a weekly INR test result.

Happy Testing!
